The Chevrolet Spark will officially end production later this year after spending a decade in the U.S. market as an extremely low-priced entry-level subcompact. In fact, it leaves the party as the cheapest new car sold in America at $13,600 before the $995 destination charge. Added Spark starts at $14,595.

A company spokesperson confirmed that the Spark will remain in production until August 2022, after which it will be phased out. Chevrolet Spark Is Now Canada’s Cheapest New Car
The Spark had its roots with Daewoo when it was called the Matiz, dating back to 1998. It hit American shores as a concept in 2007 called the Beat, before adopting the Spark moniker in 2009 when it was introduced in pre-production form at the Detroit Auto Show. It finally went on sale in 2012 as a 2013 model and was a modest sales success for the automaker at a time when companies were still recovering from the 2008-2010 auto industry collapse.
The fourth (and final) generation went on sale in 2015 as a 2016 model and received little attention over the years as SUVs and crossovers continued to invade the market. Only 24,459 Sparks were sold in 2021, down 26.9 percent from 2020, which was also a tough year. Still, the Spark outsold the Chevrolet Camaro last year, with just 21,893 bow-tie ponies finding homes.
With the departure of the Spark, the cheapest vehicle in the General Motors family becomes the Chevrolet Trax SUV at $22,595 — an $8,000 increase over the small hatchback. When the Spark makes history later this year, the Mitsubishi Mirage should reclaim its crown as America’s cheapest car at $15,640, including destination charges. The Chevrolet Spark has reached the end of the road in America as the automaker confirmed that production of the affordable hatchback will end this summer.
The news was first reported by CarsDirect and confirmed by a spokesperson who said: “The Spark will be produced until August 2022, when it will be phased out of the Chevrolet lineup.” They added, “Customers looking for comfort, functionality and style at an affordable price continue to have strong options within Chevrolet’s family of compact SUVs.”

Affordability is a relative term, of course, as the Spark is one of the cheapest vehicles in America thanks to a $13,600 sticker price ($14,595 with destination). Its demise means the 2022 Trax will finally become the bowtie brand’s entry-level vehicle, and it starts at $21,400 ($22,595 with destination), a pretty significant jump from the Spark.
That said, the Spark’s demise isn’t surprising, as sales have been relatively modest and Chevrolet has thinned out its lineup of sedans and hatchbacks in recent years. Chevrolet sold 24,460 Sparks in the U.S. last year, down from 33,480 in 2020. Even before the pandemic, sales remained in the same general range.
As a refresher, the Spark has a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 98 horsepower (73 kW / 99 PS) and 94 lb-ft (127 Nm) of torque. It is paired with a standard five-speed manual, but a continuously variable transmission is also available. This model was also noted for being one of the few vehicles to offer crank windows in the US. The Chevrolet Spark may not have been a huge sales hit, but GM says it sold a respectable 2,000 units in its first month.
The Spark is GM’s new hope for capturing younger car buyers, many of whom would otherwise look at used cars. The five-door hatchback starts at just $12,995, making it one of the cheapest cars on the market, and is powered by a 1.25-liter four-cylinder engine with just 84 hp. That’s $1,665 and 54 horsepower less than the next-cheapest Chevrolet, the Sonic sedan.
Test Drive: The New Chevrolet Spark
Reports that Chevrolet’s small hatchback hit 2,000 sales this month, a sign of modest success for the car. Of those sales, about half are the mid-level 1LT (which starts at $14,500), while the base LS model accounts for 30 percent and the top-spec $15,500 2LT accounts for about 15 percent of sales. Curiously, GM predicts that just under a third of buyers will choose a manual transmission, which is many times higher than other compact cars.
Sales aren’t bad, but that doesn’t mean the Spark doesn’t have its work cut out for it: The hatchback’s toughest competitor, the Fiat 500, is selling 3,000 to 4,000 units a month, after sales first faltered in 2011. General Motors says the Spark’s sales trajectory will be upward thanks to the car’s lower average transaction price (it’s about $14,000) and the fact that the Spark’s engine regularly runs on Fiat-recommended unleaded fuel, a boon for drivers concerned about gas prices. Even the smallest Chevrolet is currently on sale in only 18 cities: New York; Philadelphia; Washington; Boston; Chicago; Detroit; St. Louis; Atlanta; Tampa; Orlando; Dallas; Los Angeles; San Francisco; and Portland, Oregon.
Will the Spark be a big sales hit? Probably not, but we’ll have to wait and see how many crack that little hatch. WHAT: The Spark is slightly smaller than the Aveo and is designed, engineered and built in Korea. Pricing should start under $12,000.
WHY: If gas prices rise, GM will need fresh and attractive small cars to attract fuel-conscious buyers. It also shows GM’s commitment to making cars for all markets.
