Mazda2 2025 – The supermini Mazda2 received its second facelift in January 2023, but the debut was then limited to the five-door hatchback, which is the only option in the Japanese domestic market. Now that the updated model has been launched in Thailand, we’ve also seen the Mazda2 sedan benefit from the same styling and technical updates.
Predictably, the four-door model inherits the same redesigned front end, new wheel designs and new exterior trim options (Aero Gray and Air Stream Blue) as the five-door hatch. However, the flared tail styling has been carried over from the 2019 facelift, which in turn features minor changes to the bumper compared to the 2014 original.

Both the sedan and the hatchback of Mazda’s smallest range are available in two exterior styles – Sport Design and New Wave Design. The sporty design is characterized by the honeycomb pattern on the grille, black roof and mirrors, plus 16-inch alloy wheels. On the other hand, the New Wave has a body-colored partially blocked grille and a more playful design for the 15-inch wheels. Note that the Rookie Drive and Clap Pop special editions with eye-catching color combinations are only available in hatchback form.

Fewer things have changed inside the cabin. Equipment includes a small 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, automatic climate control, a wireless charging pad, a 6-way adjustable driver’s seat and an i-Activsense package with plenty of ADAS. The seats can be upholstered in black leather and suede, while the dashboard upholstery is available in different colors or in suede with red stitching (Sport Design).
In Thailand, the Mazda2’s powertrain consists of a 1.3-liter SkyActiv-G gasoline engine with 92 hp. (69 kW / 93 hp) and a 1.5-liter SkyActiv-D turbodiesel with 103 hp. (77 kW / 105 hp), both paired to a six-speed automatic transmission without a manual option. This means Thai buyers won’t get access to the 1.5-litre petrol mild hybrid offered in other markets.
The facelifted Thai-spec Mazda2 debuted at a special event in the heart of Bangkok and is now available to order. Prices range between 599,000-830,000 baht ($17,046-23,613) depending on the variant. That makes it more expensive than the rival Nissan Almera (Sentra), which also received a mid-life update last month.
The current third-generation Mazda 2 has been on sale for a decade since its debut in 2014. It has undergone numerous updates, the latest of which was introduced in January 2023, extending Mazda’s base model by a few more years.
Mazda Japan has said it is no longer accepting orders for certain variants of the Mazda 2. Meanwhile, Japanese automotive media outlet Response recently reported that the all-new fourth-generation Mazda 2 could be unveiled around the third quarter of 2024 (Q3 2024).

The publication gave an interpretation of what the all-new Mazda 2 could look like and envisioned an aggressive front-end design reminiscent of SUVs like the CX-60.
Not much information has been gleaned about what the rest of the fourth-generation Mazda 2 will look like, but Response mentioned that it’s expected to include the latest Mazda Connect infotainment system.
The most important information from this scoop will be the powertrain that is rumored to be present in the all-new Mazda 2. The 1.5-liter 4-cylinder units currently offered in the outgoing Mazda 2 will likely be introduced in the next generation , which includes naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G (90 PS/151 Nm) and turbodiesel Skyactiv-D (105 PS/250 Nm).

In addition to these units, it is rumored that two new engines may be introduced. One is a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder Skyactiv-X engine that could make its debut in the all-new Mazda 2. Despite praise from the automotive media about the engine’s fuel efficiency, sales of the current Skyactiv-X engine lineup are 2.0 -liter 4-cylinder units offered in the Mazda 3 and Mazda CX-30 are low. Maybe Mazda still has confidence in its expensive engine?
Another rumor is the rotary engine for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant. The 830cc rotary engine used could reportedly be taken from the MX-30 R-EV extended electric vehicle. The single-rotor 8C engine produced only 76 hp, but was only used as a generator to extend the MX-30’s range.
Could this all-new Mazda 2 rumor be true? In addition to Japan, the fresh Mazda 2 is also launched in Thailand, where the Malaysian model comes from. Fully imported (CBU) from our northern neighbor, the outgoing Mazda 2 is priced at RM103,000 for both hatchback and sedan.

New powertrains will reportedly include an e-Skyactiv R-EV plug-in hybrid powertrain like the larger MX-30, with a rotary engine, as well as a version of Mazda’s Skyactiv-X drivetrain.
In the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV, the drivetrain operates as a series hybrid rather than a parallel hybrid. This means that the 55kW, 830cc rotary engine generates charge for the electric motor instead of directly driving the wheels.
The spinning motor will also come to life when more power is needed than the battery level can deliver to the motors – such as during acceleration – based on the degree of throttle opening.
In the MX-30, the eSkyactiv R-EV drivetrain achieves a claimed 85km combined electric range. It uses a 17.8kWh lithium-ion battery that powers a 125kW/260Nm front motor.

Mazda’s Skyactiv-X drivetrain uses a combination of compression ignition and spark ignition across the rev range to improve fuel efficiency, and is available on the 3 and CX-30 – albeit with a larger four-cylinder engine.
The current 2 uses 5.0L/100km on the combined cycle in automatic trim for 2024, although the base Pure manual uses an unchanged 5.4L/100km.
Although it was first launched in 2014, the current 2 isn’t the oldest member of Mazda’s lineup. This will be the current Mazda 6 that was launched locally in late 2012.
The Mazda 2 has received a facelift for 2020, with the company trimming the range and adding more safety equipment and a correspondingly higher base price.

Based on the Toyota Yaris, the latest version of the Mazda2 Hybrid features revised styling, including a new bumper and grille design, giving the car more of a Mazda identity. The look is carried over to the rear, which features body-coloured rear doors, creating a sportier and more expressive look.
Beneath the updated styling lies Mazda’s intelligent hybrid technology, which seamlessly switches between electric and gasoline power or a combination of the two. The 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine produces 91 horsepower on its own, or up to 114 hp. in combination with an electric motor with a power of 59 kW. Performance figures include a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) time of 9.7 seconds and a top speed of 109 mph (175 km/h).
But the performance metrics most hybrid buyers care about are fuel economy. Here, the Mazda2 Hybrid delivers up to 61.9mpg (3.8L/100km) on the combined WLTP cycle, depending on wheel size and trim level.
