Smart City Driving Gadgets – Internet of Things and artificial intelligence are reinventing urban landscapes, making cities smarter, more sustainable and responsive to citizens’ needs
Currently, about 56% of the world’s population, or 4.4 billion people, live in cities. In today’s changing urban landscapes, the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and AI-driven analytics is transforming these fast-growing cities into smarter, more efficient and sustainable environments.

These smart cities use IoT to improve the quality of life of residents by optimizing various urban functions such as traffic flow, infrastructure maintenance, energy management, pollution control and public safety.

Well-managed smart cities contribute to more sustainable societies by using real-time data from various types of sensors to improve the quality of life, public safety, efficiency and sustainability of cities and the people who live in them. improve, commented Bjorn Andersson, Senior Director of Global Marketing and Strategy Digital Innovation at Hitachi Vantara.
“These sensors collect specific data that is analyzed to inform and instruct – in real time – how the city works,” he says. “For example, sensor data can be used to develop smart street lighting infrastructure, where the brightness of the lights is adjusted based on motion detection, saving energy when the streets are less busy.
“The possibilities are endless, and while we still have a way to go before all cities around the world can use such technology, there are still significant examples of smart city technology being used in many cities.”
Sustainability is the biggest issue for cities, and cars are by far the biggest contributor to it. As Tikiri Wanduragala, senior consultant for infrastructure solutions at Lenovo, describes, IoT devices will help reduce traffic and effectively guide autonomous vehicles through the streets of smart cities. “Missing first-time deliveries is a key factor in congestion as drivers have to return to the same address multiple times. In a smart city, location data showing when a customer is home can be shared anonymously via IoT devices with delivery companies – with their consent – so that more deliveries arrive for the first time.
The Future Of Smart City Tech
In 2021, there were over 10 billion IoT devices in the world, and by 2025, IDC expects the global volume of generated data to exceed 73 zettabytes. Managing this amount of data is a challenge.
“Smart cities today deploy thousands of sensors, and we expect this trend to grow rapidly,” says Kurt Semba, chief architect – CTO office at Extreme Networks. “The cloud is the perfect space to store and analyze this large amount of data to gain actionable insights as well as a deeper understanding of historical and future trends.”
The cloud plays an important role when it comes to large amounts of data generated by IoT devices, but a network with high bandwidth and low latency is needed, adds Wanduragala. “While reliable and affordable 5G is being deployed in cities, many smart cities around the world still lack network connectivity.”
The answer to this is edge computing: a distributed computing paradigm that brings computing and data storage closer to the data sources.
Patrizia: Digital Infrastructure Is More Than Just A Gadget
“Edge technology enables faster decision making and real-time data processing on the device itself, rather than sending information to a remote data center for processing,” explained Wanduragala. “Response times are therefore faster – a key factor in managing and ensuring the success of broadband technologies that are essential for smart cities.
“The edge computing network also tends to be more reliable and cost-effective, which benefits local governments. This is because with AI-powered on-device decision-making, data does not need to be stored in the cloud network as only important data is processed.
According to Wanduragala, artificial intelligence has a key role to play alongside IoT devices in the smart cities of the future.
“In today’s smart cities, the focus has always been on data collection: whether it was monitoring traffic hotspots or looking for water leaks. However, in the coming years, the city itself will dynamically adapt to the changing physical World react and adjust energy consumption in real time, for example to the weather.
A Vehicular Network Based Intelligent Transport System For Smart Cities Using Machine Learning Algorithms
“The evolution of surveillance began from machine to machine with the introduction of the Internet of Things, and now artificial intelligence has become transformative, enabling agility and intelligent technologies. Emerging AI technologies, such as large language models, will continue to play a role in making it easier for urban planners as well as ordinary citizens to interact with the city in which they live.
Despite these advances, challenges remain in the wider adoption of IoT in urban environments. Andersson points out that it is crucial to build trust between citizens in data management and security.
“Many citizens interact with IoT devices and sensors every day, whether they are aware of it or not. These devices include health and fitness gadgets such as smart watches, temperature controllers such as air conditioning and heating systems, and home security features. However, not all citizens can familiar with or trust such technology or the way data is managed and secured,” he says.
“It is therefore necessary to overcome any trust gaps between citizens, businesses and government. We must work together to raise awareness and encourage citizen participation in smart cities, because solutions must be designed primarily with the needs and concerns of citizens This is a collaborative process and multiple perspectives are needed.

“The goal of smart cities should be to use the insights from data to have a real impact on society and the physical world around us. This means clearly defining the goals and objectives that can be achieved by implementing technology or digital solutions are achieved.
As Wanduragala describes, smart city technology has the potential to improve lives, but to deliver on that promise, private businesses and governments must work together harmoniously. “For example, shipping companies and central government can improve services by quickly sharing data at the edge. Currently, business leaders are hesitant to collaborate – less than half of them share data with external partners, citing cost and security concerns as barriers.
“If data is used to its full potential, it will be a big step in the evolution of cities, especially when it comes to using the huge amounts of data generated by IoT sensors,” he concludes. “IoT technology is crucial to the operation of smart cities, which collect data on everything from local weather conditions to traffic information through a network of sensors in the city.
“While executives recognize the power of data, they are still wary of using it to solve real-world problems, or perhaps they are simply unable to extract its true value to do so.”
