Well, I promise to make it interesting – I will focus on this new variant (yes, another variant of the decade old Polo) how my needs changed from SUV / Crossover Go for a 10 lac sub car and also share some pictures that hopefully gives a visual break and makes you virtual Mumbai Darshan.

The Honda City 3rd Generation (2009 model) has been our trusted car for the past 6+ years. I bought it before using it in 2015 and it was an experience that had no problems with the car. High reliability, fun to drive, good engine and discreet ownership make it easy to ride (not a tire ad type). Other than the AC compressor and rear power window motor refusing to work occasionally, the car has no issues whatsoever.

Of course, cars have a special place in our hearts. However, the urge to replace it started at the end of 2019 when I started looking for an SUV that had the right automatic transmission and felt a little better. It was almost like I was preparing for Polo. When I was young, I was very happy with this decision. Test driving the bright red GT TSI sealed the deal in its favour. It’s fun to see how my needs have changed in 18 months.
My better half got more and more tired of me on social media and car buying sites and saw bright hopes when I started talking seriously about buying a Polo. We discuss how the car looks – while adjectives like ‘classy’, ‘timeless’ and ‘elegant’ flashed through my mind, she announced that the Polo looks ‘sweet’. Trying to remember all the possible engine variants and combinations the Polo has in India is more complicated than understanding “Dark” on Netflix. While some may say that VW is killing horses, I disagree, it is new wine in an old bottle with 108 horses, to be started by a new engine broken under the hood.
In typical VW fashion, their website and help network distributors are ridiculous and unaware of the details of this variant. I’ll have to look at this variant physically to make sure it has ESC. Regarding SA credit, he went the extra mile to get all the information I asked for.

The Polo’s rear wheels are very large, which gives it a solid grip. The front looks better. 185/60 R15 are very reasonable.
Overall, it’s not a rich variant (Polo itself isn’t feature rich on top variants) but for the price I still think it’s worth it. Don’t get it wrong, it’s an old car with a basic interior and more expensive than the more modern-looking competition. For those looking for a great experience or a lot of features, it will not be able to reduce.
So is this the right variant for you? If your heart is in the polo and you have the budget and the extra features of the Highline or GT TSI don’t matter so much, check it out!
I was given a reference by Volkswagen SA from another BHPian company, Vandit. I actually contacted the SA for the T-Roc, and when I asked him about the new Polo he confirmed that it was in stock in the color I chose! I called him to test drive the next day and was completely sold on the car after that. Since departure the engine and transmission have been very quick and really nice to drive. It doesn’t take long after that; I paid the deposit that evening and asked him to turn off the Comfortline AT in Lapiz Blue for me. Various formal payments were made within a few days and the car was taken to their workshop for my PDI. Reaching the back gate of the workshop through some of the narrow streets of Sewri safely is a job. If that distraction makes your head spin, it’s my first time seeing a car!

Completed the PDI file step by step and everything looks good! This car only has 7 km on the odometer. Made a full payment immediately and asked them to proceed with the registration.
SA, Ankit from VW Downtown, Worli is very responsive, helpful and generally good to deal with. Although there are not many details about this variant online, he can get me all the details, send me pictures of this variant and always respond quickly. He didn’t try to push the variants or colors he had in stock and told me all the pros and cons to help me in Decision – I like that.
I went to the distribution center twice, saw Lapiz Blue in the flesh and another transported the car. The delivery was limited as it was already 4pm (lockdown restrictions in Mumbai) and for some strange reason the SA went to give another customer a try after asking me to come there at 3:30pm. I was waiting in a closed showroom with no one to visit me and repair work going on all around me. Not a good way to end what is mostly an uninterrupted experience. Everything was arranged and his manager came to help me with the delivery. I got a small gift for the SA (Japanese lucky charm from Tokyo) which I handed over to his manager and quickly got my car – no ribbons, giant keys or other fans. They prepared for the little Pooja I was on duty and I closed. There was also some frustration that I had to pay a separate premium amount again and they started refunding from the amount I had already paid (the refund still works btw)

The overall experience is positive and I would recommend this dealer and Ankit for those looking to buy a Volkswagen in Mumbai.
A lot has been written about this car and this engine, so I won’t bore you with repetition. What I will say is that it is as good as what you read/hear about. What I heard from a friend is that the DSG is a little better to change, but this torque converter There is no slip.
